A Word about our Worship (What is “Rite III?!”)

Posted in Body Life on September 2, 2011 by epiphanytyler

In the Epiphany Eucharist we strive to worship the Living God in ways that are thoughtful yet reverent. We are trying to give folks a taste of liturgy that is ancient and substantial, yet accessible. Just as we don’t worship in Latin(!), so also we look for ways to foster peoples’ ability to connect with what we are doing in the liturgy, and why.

Why do we make the sign the cross, for example, and how and when?

The music in this service is more contemporary than most traditional Episcopal Eucharists.

As for the Scripture lessons, our practice is to include two lessons (a “first lesson,” either from a New Testament letter or the Old Testament or the Apocrypha and a Gospel lesson) and a psalm (or canticle) in response to the first lesson. Of these three readings (including the Psalm) two of the them will match the lesson from the lectionary used by the other services of Christ Church on any given Sunday. In this way the entire Christ Church community is worshiping together to a large extent.

As for the liturgy, the Epiphany Eucharist is (what is colloquially known as) a “Rite III” Eucharist. (See page 400 of the Book of Common Prayer.) However, in an effort not to “reinvent the wheel,” what we are doing is borrowing liturgies from around the Anglican Communion. For example, in Lent we worship with a liturgy from the Church of Ireland. In the Sundays in Eastertide we use a liturgy from Australia. In ordinary time we use two liturgies: one from Kenya and one from New Zealand.

In this way we celebrate our worldwide, sacramental communion of believers!

Soul Friends

I recently reviewed George Hunter’s The Celtic Way of Evangelism. (See here and here.)

The Celtic way of evangelism was all about bringing people into a new kind of community, through such practices as radical hospitality as well as “soul friends” (anamchara). These people would engage the visitor or stranger in “the ministry of conversation,” and involvement in small groups of fellowship. In all these ways and more, the Celtic Christians practiced evangelism in a way which many “postmodern” Christians have come to embrace, that is, in recognition that many times “belonging precedes belief,” that before many people can begin to believe in Jesus, they must feel that they belong to a community of his followers.

This kind of evangelism, based in a ministry of hospitality, is (among other things) what we are doing in the Epiphany Community of Tyler.

Summer Teaching Series: “Living the Creed in a Crazy World”

Posted in Uncategorized on June 3, 2011 by epiphanytyler

Ascension. Pentecost. Trinity Sunday.

Back to back to back: this Sunday, next Sunday, the following Sunday.

June 5, June 12, June 19.

Three huge moments in our Story. Jesus is enthroned as King of the World; Jesus pours out his Spirit upon his new people; Jesus is recognized as being one member of this mysterious, loving family (together with the Father and the Spirit).

It seems like a perfect time for me to launch a new sermon series, one that will have us dealing with our story, both our story inscripturated (the Holy Scriptures, particularly the Old Testament) and our story performed (the Nicene Creed, which we confess every Sunday).

This is a perfect time to go deeper into our story, a perfect time to ask questions, without which we are wasting our time.

Diolog: The Texas Episcopalian

Posted in Uncategorized on June 1, 2011 by epiphanytyler

Are you an Epiphany person who is new to Christ Church, new to the Episcopal Church or to Anglicanism? Are you someone who perhaps has visited Epiphany once or twice who is curious about it and the larger church it is a part of? Are you a long time Christ Church member who does not receive Diolog, the monthly magazine of the Diocese of Texas?

I want to encourage you to subscribe. It costs nothing, and I’m telling you, every time I read it I am captivated and encouraged!

The topic of the current issue is “Spiritual Growth in Pilgrimage,” and deals with issues such as ecology, Christian history, social justice, and Bishop Doyle “taking church on the road.”

To subscribe, go here.

And while you are at it, send Christ Church an email asking to be added to our database (if you are not already added), to Lee Hensarling at lhensarling@christchurchtyler.org.

Opportunities to Connect through Epiphany

Posted in Uncategorized on May 19, 2011 by epiphanytyler

One of the most wonderful experiences I get to have as the “chief trouble maker” of the Epiphany Community is to see new folks get to know some of the wise, seasoned disciples of Christ who are the parishioners of Christ Church.

We have some great upcoming opporunities to connect and to mix & mingle within both communities:

“Rockin’ on the Rio Grande” (Friday, May 27 @ 7PM) is really just an excuse to get everyone together for a fun night of fellowship. The live music will be provided by local “country rock” band The Magills. The food will be great. This is at Holly Tree Country Club in Tyler.

Also, on Sunday, May 29 we have a special opportunity during the Christian Formation Hour at Christ Church to focus on the connections between spiritual formation and global mission, all within an Angican context. Canon John Newton, a gifted and thoughtful priest in our diocese, will talk to us about this and more. We will be focusing on Christ Church’s participation in “Nets for Life“, a way for us to save lives in Africa, in partnership with our Diocese and the rest of the Anglican Communion.

Epiphany Eucharist: up & running

Posted in Uncategorized on March 29, 2011 by epiphanytyler

This last Sunday we had our seventh Epiphany Eucharist at 11:05 at Christ Church, and once again it was a powerful service of worship!

From our music ministry, to our preaching, to our children’s ministry, to our fellowship, truly God is at work.

This is now a service to which we can invite our friends!

Our average attendance at this service, over the past seven weeks, is in the mid-60′s. Thanks be to God!

We are just getting started.

Soon we will have audio & video of the service, providing even better opportunity to invite our friends!
